Lincoln Thoughts

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 1:26 PM

If you must know, the politician I admire the most was nevertheless wrong about most issues: William Jennings Bryan. So sticking up for Lincoln is not something I do from ideology, or if it is ideology, it’s only in the broadest possible sense. The country we have now, if there is something to preserve, we owe it to Mr. Lincoln.

A Catholic Revisits the Five Solas

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 9:20 PM

In fairness, Sola Fide is precisely “Justification by faith alone.” We have to be careful as both advocates and opponents of Protestant theology can misstate what the Solas mean. It doesn’t help me or others to help them misstate their own position.

Wimbledon 2025: The Future is Now

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 9:08 PM

This year’s version of The Championships still had the shadow of The Big Three (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) lurking over it, though only Djokovic remains. Indeed, Djokovic made it all the way to a semifinal, before succumbing to his opponent, and an injury sustained in the previous round. The manner of his dismissal suggests the future of men’s tennis is now.

The Democrats Who Cried Wolf

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 9:50 AM

I’ll just illustrate something I’m on about, and maybe someone will get it. Bearing in mind that my opposition to Trump and all his insanity is loud, consistent, and well-known. I saw a commercial in the summer of 2024 by Trump — and I hoped I was wrong — but that’s when I knew the presidential election was over. The commercial said, “Kamala Harris cares about ‘they/them’; Donald Trump cares about you.” That’s when it ended.

The False Compassion of Universalism

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 10:17 PM

I’ve only heard nonsense from David Bentley Hart. He tries to cloak an argument for universal salvation in Christian language, an endeavor popular to our cultural ears and foreign to God’s Words.

The Frivolous Opposition

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 6:37 PM

Vice President Harris’ seeming enthusiasm for “reproductive rights” kept me from fully supporting her. But, anyone saying “Trump is the obvious choice” has not taken stock of how bad he really is.

On the Contrary: Abortion Is Everyone's Business

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 5:16 PM

Last week, Vice President Harris chose Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota to be her running mate for the fall presidential election. He’s an interesting person with many fine qualities, and perhaps even some compelling issue positions, depending upon your perspective. It must be said, however, that the Vice President and Governor Walz continue to uphold their national party’s extreme views on abortion, and the right to life.

“Traditiones Custodes” and the Pastoral Theology of Vatican II

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 6:30 PM

The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, popularly known as Vatican II, sought to confront a hidebound clericalism, and a modern world that no longer takes as its starting points basic natural law and Christian dogmatic commitments. It is unfortunately known in some circles for the opportunity it provided for poorly catechized Catholics and progressive innovators to make changes (liturgical abuses) under the guise of the Council’s authority.

Adam Wainwright

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 11:31 AM

No, you don’t understand. I love him. Results don’t matter to me, at this point. OK, they do, but the point is that he’s my favorite pitcher, no matter what. He’s absolutely earned the right to pitch poorly in his final season, and the only thing any halfway decent Cardinals fan should say is, “Oh, well, I guess Waino didn’t have it today.”

I Still Miss Dale Earnhardt

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 12:13 PM

February 28, 2001. A lovely Sunday, and a great day for a Daytona 500. That is, until we lost Dale Earnhardt (Sr). The racing legend began his dominance at the precise time that television and advertising was beginning to make NASCAR—-the pre-eminent stock car racing series here in the US—-visible to a mainstream audience. Earnhardt won 7 season championships in NASCAR’s top series, between 1980 and 1994, and was most likely its most beloved driver by fans. (His son, Dale, Jr., was far and away NASCAR’s most popular driver his entire career.)
